ONLY ONE WATER is an ongoing series of cameraless cyanotypes made with water collected from different sources (taps, rivers, springs, streams, fountains, toilets, wells, pools, oceans, mangroves, lakes, rain, snow) in locations around the world, including so far valleys, mountains in Switzerland, the highlands of Jalisco in Mexico, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
Each individual image emerges as the result of an interaction between the light-sensitive cyanotype emulsion, specific weather conditions, the quality of the water and what it holds - dust, sand, soil, minerals, algae, plastic debris. These interactions create pools of colour and oxidation which hold a material trace of the landcape in them. In the face of current issues around the availability and uneven distribution of freshwater worldwide, this project is a reminder that all forms of life on this planet are connected through the water which supports our existence and the universal laws it follows. That the water we all share has been following its endless cycle for nearly 5 billion years, knowing no borders. There has always been, and there will only ever be, one water, for all of us, for all of (our) time.
